Honda - Acura B-Series Engine Modification Guide - First Steps to a Faster Car

The first step to getting more horsepower is getting your engine to breath better. An intake, a header and an exhaust system are the keys to doing that, often referred to as I/H/E. Remember, you get what you pay for, cheap products may save you some money but in the end it hasn't usually had the research and development of the more expensive products and will not make the same power.

Intake

If you are looking to make more power go for a cold air intake (CAI) over a short ram intake (SRI). A SRI may offer a (very) slight increase in throttle response but not enough to warrant that fact that it is drawing hot air into your engine. For the best power and throttle response go for a closed box system, they are more expensive but definitely worth the money, especially if you are intending to hit the race track. Many units are CARB legal and feature a lifetime warranties.

Header

Out of I/H/E the header will make the most difference, it will also determine how much power your future modifications will make, so don't cheap out, invest in a good one. Think about it, if your header is restricting airflow what good is a bigger exhaust going to do. There are two main styles, 4-2-1 (where the 4 pipes from the exhaust ports join to make two pipes which them join together into 1) or 4-1 (where the four pipes join together to make one). 4-1 design is beneficial for top end power but you will almost certainly loose bottom end power. I would recommend 4-2-1 design, as it offers an increase across the entire rev range.

Exhaust

In terms of making power, most exhausts will offer little difference from one another, the main thing is the sound. The only thing you want to be careful of is that you choose the right size. Go 2.25" - 2.5" for a small build i.e. just I/H/E, go for 2.5" to 3" if your planning on going further i.e. camshafts, headwork etc. There are many videos online which will be able to give you an idea of what a certain exhaust will sound like.

Tuning
By now your probably noticing that your car is a little bit faster, but get it well tuned and it will be totally transformed. Find out what your local tuner prefers to tune on for your best results. Once tuned go out and have some fun with your car!

Throttle Body and Intake Manifold

These will net you a little more power but are particularly important if you are going to go to the next step i.e. modifying the head. Your overall goal will help you to determine which manifold you need, some are optimized for extremely high RPM and are only suitable for extreme build and drag racing, whereas others will deliver good usable mid range power and are great for circuit racing and on the street.

In terms of throttle body choose something a little larger than your standard one, there is no point bolting a 70mm throttle body onto a car that previously had a 62mm. A 65mm or 68mm would be a better choice and would make more power, unless of course you are going to go further with camshafts etc. In general there is little to no difference between the amount of power made from a cheap to an expensive throttle body, the difference is in the reliability.

Now that these are done get a tune! This is about as much horsepower as you are going to get from bolt-on products, to go further you must open up the engine.
