Honda Accord Third Generation (1986-1989)

The first major change in the third generation Accords that you would see was a new body style that resembled earlier Preludes. Another new change was flip-up headlights, which were unique on sedan models.
A major mechanical design change for the car was the inclusion of double-wishbones at both the front and rear ends of the car. They were more expensive than the typical Macpherson struts found in most small to medium size front engine cars. It also gave the car outstanding handling for a small sedan.
Some of the models now have four-wheel disk brakes in two different sizes, while other models remained with the older front disk and rear drum combination.
Outside of the U.S. you could purchase an Accord with an optional ABS system. Base U.S. models came with 13-inch wheels while the more expensive units had optional 14 inch alloy wheels. From a first generation minimal interior you could now get a very luxurious one, with full power leather upholstery, heated seats, heated mirrors and climate control.
Unfortunately because this car was sold as an economy model, these options were not available in the U.S.
The model line had now expanded to include a 2-door coupe, a 3-door hatchback, a 4-door sedan and a 3-door station wagon. Engines came in two flavors, either a 2.0 liter 98 hp model or a 2.0 liter 120 hp version. The transmissions varied from a 4-speed automatic, a 5-speed automatic and the standard 5-speed manual.
During 1988 an Accord coupe was introduced for the first time. It was manufactured in Marysville, Ohio and was especially notable as being the first Japanese car to be produced in a factory located in the U.S. and exported back to Japan.
In 1989 the SE-I model was introduced with leather sets, cup holders, a Bose music system, bronze-tinted glass and special 14" alloy wheels. Also it came with a dual-tip muffler and 4-wheel disc brakes. The I designation was for fuel injection.
