The Divorce Bandit - A Strange But True California Story

The state of California holds a unique place in the hearts and minds of most Americans. Millions continue to view it as a land of endless new opportunities, a place to reinvent yourself under the bright lights of Hollywood or in the charming, free-thinking streets of San Francisco. However, with this reputation of a place for self-discovery comes the inevitable cultural opinion: California is weird.
Those unfamiliar with a land in which so many seem to be trying to begin anew in so many different ways can be naturally off put. Author Don DeLillo once claimed that "California deserves whatever it gets. Californians invented the concept of life-style. This alone warrants their doom." While his point might be a bit harshly put, it is definitely taken. Things in California are simply not done the same as in the other fifty-nine states.
Consider the case of a man known to police as the "Irreconcilable Differences Bandit." California authorities report that the man they believe is responsible for at least five bank robberies has repeatedly prefaced the crime itself with an explanation to the teller that he is facing a divorce and needs to get his hands on some cash quickly without his wife's lawyer finding out.
After relating this sad story, the man, whom police describe as 5'8'', between 145 and 150 pounds, and wearing a polo shirt and aviator sunglasses, would pass a note saying he was armed with a bomb and a gun. When the teller quickly complied with his demand for money, he would take off in his Honda accord only to strike again.
The "Irreconcilable Differences Bandit" has now struck in Pasadena, Beverly Hills, Glendale, and the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. He has been reported as armed and dangerous, and police say any information about his whereabouts should be directed to the FBI.
We all know that divorce is a difficult time in anyone's life, but as the Divorce Bandit has proven, in California, sometimes the stress of this process can lead to some definitely unexpected behavior. However, even if you live in this state and are currently facing legal separation, you don't have to turn to a life of crime to cope.
